How to replace wipers on Camry 98

I need to replace wipers on my 1998 Camry. On other cars usually I was able to just pull out the rubber refill and pop a new one in. I looked at the wipers and I can't see how to do that. The Owner's Manual has nothing on the subject. What is the trick? What do I need to buy (probably at Walmart)? Are there anywhere some illustrated instructions that I could download? Thanks for any help.

Go to Advanced Auto or such car parts place and ask them to install it for you. They usually do it for free.

The reason there is nothing in the manual is that wiper blades and inserts come in a variety of types and they change all the time. If you are not mechanically inclined and can't see how to change them ask someone else to help.

If you still have the factor metal wipers, then you should buy Toyota rubber refills at the dealer. Look for sales or specials on dealer websites or advertising mailers. The Toyota refills have instructions on how to install them (the parts guy will be glad to help if you ask when they are not busy). For the 98 Camry you must tell the parts department whether your car is made in Japan or US (check first character of VIN) to get the correct rubber refill, and there are different size refills for driver and passenger side.

If you are not the original owner (a distinct possibility since the rubber refills only last about 3 years--and less if you frequently park in the sun), it is possible that the metal wiper blades are not the original equipment. In that case getting the Toyota rubber refills would probably not be appropriate.

I've tried to replace the factory rubber inserts and it is just not worth it. They cost more than getting a new set of blades from Anco, available in any auto parts store. The whole blade (the metal and rubber part) just snap off and the new one snaps on in its place. Total time to accomplish this is under a minute and the auto parts stores usually will do it for you if you ask.

I have replaced rubber inserts on a Toyota probably about 6-7 times (two different cars). I don't see what the problem is. My local Toyota right now has an internet coupon of $2.99 for each insert (you need 2).

Mark is right on here. I personally prefer to use the coupon to get Toyota refills (~$6 a pair). The natural rubber blades last longer than man-made nitrile rubber ones but don't cost more with the coupon.

The lengths and widths change with different wipers/years, so you'll have to check first to make sure what you currently have.

============= Wiper refills (Toyota) come in three pieces for each blade insert: the wiper blade itself and two metal ribs - one on each side of the blade that are installed prior to sliding the blade into the metal wiper arm. There is a release at the end of the blade that is compressed to pass by the wiper arm fingers, like any other blade insert.
