Power Steering Pump 96 Camry V6

Has anyone had problems with the power steering pump leaking. I have had a leak in that area for a while and the PS pump is soaked in oil. I'm assuming its the pump. The only strange problem is that the oil is brown, as in motor oil. Any Ideas?

Hmmm,...it could be water contaminated. Put a clean rag end into the resevoir and see what colour it is. Leaking PS soon needs topping up,..so how fast is the level dropping in the plastic resevoir?

Ultimately a seal job is required if it is leaking, but try a std mechanic instead of Toyota as the job is not complicated or unique to Toyotas.

Thanks,

The rag showed red fluid.

Do you need special tools to change the seals?

Never touched one, so I dont know. I'll check out the manual and get back to you.

They are a 'specialist item' according to the manual and should be serviced by a steering place. I'm sure this means that judicous use of a press is requied with careful attention to running clearances when re-assembling.
