Sludge - My Own Story :)

94 Camry with replacement v6 from a 95 Avalon, 60,000 on the engine. No service records. I immediately began using synthetic. Used Lucas, had some valve stem seal leak. 35,000 miles later, the oil light came on briefly one day. Took it to a shop. "Sludge" was the verdict. I was not shown any proof and the light had not come on again in a day or so, so other mechanics said it was likely a sensor. Fast forward a year, just recently...oil light comes two successive days, both near my house and was able to shut down pretty quickly. Off to the shop, a different one this time, and sludge was declared. Also had some engine pinging, which turned out to be a clogged EGR. Still have an engine light on likely due to O2 sensor. Anyway, they dropped the pan, pulled the valve cover, washed it down with kerosene while dislodging all that they could. When replacing the pickup tube screen, rather than a flat piece, they put a ball of screen, like a microphone head, over the tube end to create more area for circulation. When they put oil back in, they used 10-40 Castrol regular and I am not going back to synth, I guess. The EGR valve de-clogging stopped the pinging and increased my mileage back to 30 on the highway from about 22 mpg. That work, plus radiator service and some other small stuff..$800 total and four days in shop. De-sludging was about $500 of the total, mostly labor, of course.

"35,000 miles later" leaves kind of a gap in the story. Personally, I check the oil level and condition once a week. If it's dirty, I change it, regardless of mileage. Especially with a used engine and uncertain history. Once of the nice things about Mobil 1 is improved internal engine cleanliness, but if you're starting with prior accumulation, and a relatively small oil filter . . . From an oil engineer's paper describing sludge:

How Sludge Forms eventually, if the oil is not changed often enough, a "breaking point" will be reached.

He was talking about detergency, additive packages, oil level and contaminants that are present in every normally operating engine.

Toyota's estimate of engine oil sludge complaints was 3,200 in 2002. Why then does a Toyota spokesperson, John Hanson, say in a recent article that there are only about the same number of complaints to date? What kind of deceit is that?

With over a thousand dealerships nationwide and several cases of sludge in a months time, how in the world did Toyota come up with that number? Even if not all owners are reporting the problem, are we to believe that Toyota is naive enough not to know better?

Toyota is making the details of its "Customer Support Program for Engine Oil Gelation" very hard to find even on its own web site. Toyota is contributing to the shut down of discussion of the matter on several web sites, including Edmund's Town Hall, which close the discussion right after it began!

Toyota is taking lots of money from new Toyota owners for extended warranties and denying the claims when sludge hits. Does it know this will happen? Isn't this fraud?!? Is any information given out to prospective buyers who are shopping for a "certified used" Toyota? Are they told about the CSP at a bare minimum? No, they are not. Are they duped into buying an extended warranty which will turn out to be bogus for sludge repairs? Sure, they are.

How long will Toyota go on denying this problem is related to engine design or component malfunction? How long will it keep that "proprietary data" hidden from the Toyota owners and the buying public? How long will this company secretly fight those who wish to speak out about the matter? How long will it keep up this charade?

Many Toyota owners would like to know the answers to these questions. Many cannot believe that a company can carry out its business in this manner and still be expected to be respected in the marketplace.
