I have a 93 camry, i drained the ATF and refilled throgh the gage pipe. On starting, the torque converter does not seem to engage. Did I do something wrong? Is there a way to correct this. I am thinking, maybe the torque converter is not filled with the fluid and hence it is not engaging. Does draining the oil again and backwashing the screen and filling it up help it get started? Please advice. Thanks in advance.

If fluid the right level on the dipstick,if it is you did nothing wrong.
If an older vehicles' transmission has not been serviced regularly, changing the fluid at this point could have stirred up dirt or disrupted a potential underlying problem within the transmission. Best guest would be to drive it for a good 20 minutes up and down hills or in the city and check the fluid level....if its full and still slipping, you've got bigger problems.
excuse me for asking the obvious, but did you have the engine running when you checked the level?
