Hello,
I have a 2004 Tundra with 124,000 miles on it, I bought it new and have had all the service done at the dealership. I encountered a pinging problem when the truck was about 3 months old, and around
10,000 miles. I was towing a trailer with about 4,000 pounds of metal roofing at the time. I had noticed the pinging before that, but with the trailer, it was almost constant. I took it into the dealership, and they told me to use better gas. I had been using Chevron Mid Grade (88 octane) from day one. I tried using supreme for about a month, with no effect. The pinging occurs between 3500 and 4000 RPMs, and is more noticeable when towing or using the A/C. I kept complaining about the pinging to my service advisers every time I took the truck in for service, and they didn't ever seem to do anything about it. Finally at 99,000 miles, I told the dealership that I wanted something more done, and I wanted it fixed while it was still under warranty. They finally had one of their techs come out and talk to me, he asked me good questions, and said it sounded like an injector problem. He then bench tested the injectors and found that two were not performing properly. He said he has seen a fair number of Tundras with this problem. To my surprise, the warranty company claimed that fuel injectors are not covered because they are a "wear item." This infuriated me, because I had paid for a comprehensive warranty that was supposed to be "bumper to bumper," and further because I had been complaining about the pinging for 2 years and almost 90,000 miles. And I had the top of the line service performed every 30,000 miles that included a pressurized fuel system cleaning. I also had the timing belt changed early at 75,000 miles trying to get rid of this problem. I really feel like I've kind of been screwed over by the dealership, and warranty company, which are both owned by Larry H. Miller Automotive Group. So I guess my question is, have any other Tundra owners experienced similar problems with pinging, and if so, has it been remedied, and what was the problem.
Thanks
Dave
