2004 Tundra pinging

Hello,

I have a 2004 Tundra with 124,000 miles on it, I bought it new and have had all the service done at the dealership. I encountered a pinging problem when the truck was about 3 months old, and around

10,000 miles. I was towing a trailer with about 4,000 pounds of metal roofing at the time. I had noticed the pinging before that, but with the trailer, it was almost constant. I took it into the dealership, and they told me to use better gas. I had been using Chevron Mid Grade (88 octane) from day one. I tried using supreme for about a month, with no effect. The pinging occurs between 3500 and 4000 RPMs, and is more noticeable when towing or using the A/C. I kept complaining about the pinging to my service advisers every time I took the truck in for service, and they didn't ever seem to do anything about it. Finally at 99,000 miles, I told the dealership that I wanted something more done, and I wanted it fixed while it was still under warranty. They finally had one of their techs come out and talk to me, he asked me good questions, and said it sounded like an injector problem. He then bench tested the injectors and found that two were not performing properly. He said he has seen a fair number of Tundras with this problem. To my surprise, the warranty company claimed that fuel injectors are not covered because they are a "wear item." This infuriated me, because I had paid for a comprehensive warranty that was supposed to be "bumper to bumper," and further because I had been complaining about the pinging for 2 years and almost 90,000 miles. And I had the top of the line service performed every 30,000 miles that included a pressurized fuel system cleaning. I also had the timing belt changed early at 75,000 miles trying to get rid of this problem. I really feel like I've kind of been screwed over by the dealership, and warranty company, which are both owned by Larry H. Miller Automotive Group.

So I guess my question is, have any other Tundra owners experienced similar problems with pinging, and if so, has it been remedied, and what was the problem.

Thanks

Dave

Dave, I have a 2000 Tacoma Prerunner thet started having a pinging problem last summer. I took it to my dealer and they said alot of Tacoma's do it, they think caused by a small amount of carbon on the pistons. I tried a couple of things thet did not work. I then found some stuff at my work that is made by AC-Delco called X-66 , first off, because of its chemical make-up it can not be sold in California, so if you live there you wont be able to get it. The directions on the can tell you slowly feed it through a vacuum port at idle until the can is nearly empty, then stall the engine with the last of the stuff. Let the truck sit for 20 mins. Start the engine and rev it a few times to clear the stuff out. There was a little smoke but not to much. And in my V-6 I have not heard a sound from it and I am back to using 87 octane again. I will get you the actual part number on Monday so you can try some if you dont live in Cal. if you want. Scott

I'd be interested in knowing what exactly that product is Scott as wouldnt mind giving that a go in my V6 4Runner (3VZE).

Im in Australia so the California laws dont exactly apply to me. ;o)

Cheers

Scotty,

My truck has the 5VZ-FE V-6. This product has worked wonders for my truck. The people at the GM garages also have a product called Top Engine cleaner, I would wonder if the Holden people there would have a similar product. Again I will get the actual part numbers on Monday. I will leave a message for you on this site. I was really surprised what one treatment did, and the stuff is really inexpensive. Scott

I would be interested in learning more about this; I realized that I did not mention that my truck has the V8, but carbon buildup can happen regardless. I had a 1999 Tacoma Prerunner that I traded in for the Tundra to have more room, I had 88,000 miles on it with no problems, I sometimes wish I would have kept that truck. Thanks for your help.

Scotty,

Sea foam is a biggy apparently over there, not sure what our equivalent is here in Oz, so will watch this thread with great anticipation.
