Can anyone explain why the 4WD Tacoma Access Cab automatic gets better MPG than the 6-speed manual? Is 1st gear in the 6-speed a granny or is
6th a tall overdrive? I had assumed the 6-speed was for better hwy cruising mileage. This is from toyota.com:
4.0-liter V6 engine with 6-speed manual (city/hwy) 16/21
4.0-liter V6 engine with 5-speed automatic (city/hwy) 18/22
Confusing the matter, the toyota.com PDF e-brochure shows "only" 17/21 for the automatic. Fueleconomy.gov also shows 17/21 for the auto but
16/20 for the 6-speed.
Also, since it's several hundred pounds heavier than last year, the
4WD w/2.7L 4 cylinder appears to have a lower torque-to-weight ratio even though they boosted overall power. Its horsepower-to-weight ratio is just slightly higher than last year's. But I like the 19/23 MPG improvement if it can be believed.
