Early 5spd's were notorious for rear lay shaft (counter-cluster shaft) bearing to pit and being very noisy when in 1st, 2nd & 5th gear. These gears are @ the rear of the shaft and load that bearing. good luck! kend
one of the roller bearings has a race and balls chipped, and if you don't get it fixed ASAP, the hardened chips will float thru the gearbox and 'print' pits into everything that meshes together. I elected to let the dealer overhaul my '85 4runner trans, after I pulled and re-installed it myself, cost me $800. cdn. They replaced all the bearings because of the pitting on them, I had to drive it about 1000 km before getting home after it started to growl in 5th, drove all the way in
4th. I took a few bearings apart to see how badly pitted and they would not have lasted very long. The cause of the failure ? the dealer service manager said it was caused by 'lugging' in 5th, not shifting up or down soon enough, common problem if you lug these in 5th.. Jim
