94 Toyota Surf 3.0 Diesel auto Driveline bearing HELP!

Hi Fella's....and font of knowledge...ha..ha

Got a problem with a bearing somewhere on the front part of the trans driveline.

Coming back to the UK from France last week I noticed a slight drone/ vibration through the steering wheel at speed....when I slowed down I heard a tinny crackling noise from the front right at about walking pace ...sounded like i'd got gravel or road chippings trapped behind the brake disc back plate/deflector.

It only makes a noise when warm when slowing not accelerating when in 2 wheel drive not in 4 wheel drive

I jacked up the truck .....spun the right front wheel checked for stones ok the wheel spun smoothly without noise as it should.......nothing?

I spun the front prop and both drive shafts and checked the joints.....no roughness?

In 2 wheel drive I know the front prop stays stationary but the driveshafts turn due to the outer hub drive flange so i removed this rechecked the bearings for smoothness and debris...ok

BUT I did notice a small amount of play/lift in the left front axle drive flange ( the one in the diff/ axle casing) could this be the problem?

Could I remove the front diff/axle unit complete ..both front driveshafts and the front propshaft ...refit the outer drive flanges and dust caps( letting the hubs run free) and use it in 2 wheel drive ....... just to keep me mobile?

lastly can anyone send me any links or links to info on how to strip and repair the front axle bearing?

many thanks

Tim .. in the UK...

You can buy a remanufactured axle with both CV joints for around $75 in the US. I think they were a bit pricier in Japan but I would get my parts from Japanese junk yards because they had nearly perfect cars at dirt cheap prices.

Good link for Surf repairs in Oz. Cars in Australia are ridiculously expensive so they get the old Japanese throwaways and drive them forever.
