95 4-runner Intermittent AC

Someone else had this problem too. Anyone really know a fix??

Symptoms: Works well for a while and then cooling stops. Open the windows for a few miles and it comes back.

I have had the same problem for several years, with no luck working it out. I now know the solution, and should have known all along. When your condenser coil (in front of the radiator) is unable to get rid of the heat the system has remove from the car, the cooling system will kick out to protect the compressor. Basically, if the system is cooling some of the time, the charge is ok, then the electric controlling it is the thing to look at. However, if the condenser is unable to get rid of the heat the unit is working right when it shuts off. You need to look at why the condenser is unable to get rid of the heat. It can be clogged up with dirt and leaves, but I will bet you have the same problem as I. How about a weak water pump. I would smell antifreeze, but not see much if any lost coolant and no boil over. The water pump finally gave up this week, put in a new one and a timing belt, not to bad a job. I now have AC at all times. I would guess the motor heat was more than the condenser could handle. The water pump and timing belt is a $600.00 to $800.00 repair, but the parts are only about $100.00. A 95 4 runner can use two different water pumps so, make sure you get the right one. Good Luck Bill. cool at last
