96 4Runner Engine Ticking Noise

Jan 06, 2005 3 Replies

I have a 1996 3.4L V6 4Runner with has 155000km on it. I recently noticed that there is a ticking noise coming from the engine compartment on the drivers side. I can not hear the noise in the car...I have to be standing outside. From what I can tell it does not increase in frequency with an increase in RPM's (it actually hard to tell cause I can't hear the ticking with the throttle opened up). Is this something that I should be concerned about? Can someone point me in the direction of where to look to solve this? The truck still drives perfectly fine. Thanks, Chad

Most probably either a noisey fuel pump or injector, dont worry about it, they all do it.

Fuel pump is in the tank, and the injectors should increase with the RPMs. Toyota is know for noisey fuel injectors. On my 3L, I can hear them easly from the front of the truck. Not stuck my head under a running 3.4L so I can't say if that is what you are hearing.

Chad, I have the same engine in my 96 and I get a similar noise as well, when I bought it used 100,000 km's ago I was nervous but it has not affected anything, I wouldn't worry about it. On my truck it sounds like it is coming from the charcoal filter on the driverside wheel well,

Dave
