99 Taco - 4WD Indicator

Dec 04, 2003 4 Replies
99 Tacoma 3.4L TRD AT with 83K miles. This a.m. when I shifted into 4H (ADD), the 4WD indicator light didn't turn on. I could hear the diff clicking into 4WD, but the light never did light up. This is the first time I've tried the 4WD for a couple of months. Recently I replaced the rear shocks on the truck. Could I have knocked a wire or relay loose? Or maybe the little indicator light just burned out? What should I check out?

Thanks. Tyler Bowley

If you take the dash off to replace the bulb, replace *all* of the bulbs so you don't have to do it again...

I had a problem last year, where my the 4wd light would not come on my 98 tacoma. A quick spin of the tires on a gravel road verifed I was only in

2wd. You might be hearing a relay or solenoid under the dash, not the diff clicking. When the 4wd stopped working on my truck, I didn't take it into the shop right away. I kept trying over a few days and one day, the 4wd light pulsated on/off very quickly. I kept shifting in and out while sitting in neutral (maybe 10 times very quickly) and it eventually went into 4wd. It has worked fne ever since. Now I use 4wd every couple of weeks at a minimum. Very stange, but I'm sure there is a good explanation. Here's a good page for info on Toyota 4wd:

The 4WD is working (verified after a snow) and the light now comes on intermittently. Maybe it is just the bulb.

Thanks for the website.
