ac belt tensioner troubles!

hello,

my a/c belt started squeling yesterday on my 94 p/u 4x4 so i tried to tighten the tensioner bolt, but the pulley was as far down as it would go and the belt was still a little loose ( it stopped squeling, but is more loose than i would like it too be). i took it a local mechanic who tried to tighten it and then said that i need a new tensioner/pulley assemble, b/c mine is bent. once home and back under the truck i noticed that the pulley is at an angle and the tensioner bolt is not straight. i think that the mechanic cranked on the tensioner bolt so much that he bent the bolt going through the pulley and subsequently, the pulley is now at an angle. anyway, the belt is still not tight and i'm afraid the pulley is going to rub the belt wrong and it'll throw and maybe take out the others. any suggestions or thoughts? what about a smaller belt? thanks!

Someone may have replaced the belt with the wrong size. Might be worth either picking up a new belt from Toyota (take your VIN number in to get the right part) or if that comes up the same size (belt length will be stamped on the belt, something like

17AVxxx where "xxx" is the lelt length in mm), try a good auto parts store and order a belt ~10mm shorter. I had to run a slightly longer belt after I changed to a higher output alternator on my '85:

As you can see from the above page, someone must have swapped the factory 880mm belt on my engine to 890 at one time. Even so, it tensioned fine, but was still too short for the larger alternator, so I had to step up to a 915mm belt.

Jason ,

Well , I have a saturn I wish I never wasted the $$ on , and it was the pully bearing making the squeel---the pully had to be replaced with a "better" one , but if the tensioner is bent , then that should be replaced too especially if the belt is loose . I wish I had been wise enough to buy another Toyota Truck instead of throwaway junk . While at it , I would replace the belt too with origonal size , if not a major problem . ( of course have it done if not qualified )

Good Luck , tim
