Frantz toilet paper filters

Are any of you folks using Frantz toilet paper filters for your oil? What's your experience? Does it work as advertised?

Yes, works very well. The drawbacks are high cost to buy the unit and frequent changes of the paper roll. The oil lasts just about forever due to the extremely fine filtration and the new oil added every 2000-3000 miles when the roll is replaced. Also, if you extend the oil drains, you'll need an oil analysis from a lab every

5000 miles (the recommended oil drain interval, right?) to prove that the oil is still good to protect your warranty.

Alternatives to the Frantz would the the modified Motorguard filter or the OilGuard, or Amsoil (and others)

(also sold as a Racor) Why bother? If you'll drive many, many miles each year, you'll save oil and filter costs and have less wear on the engine. If you drive an average number of miles, your excellent Toyota engine will outlast the rest of the truck with just normal maintenance.

Good idea, bad execution.

Depth filters are great at 'scrubbing' the oil in combination with the factory full-flow filter to grab all the big chunks. If you want to add a 'depth bypass' type oil filter, there are filter elements available from the major oil filter makers (in spin-on or cartridge styles) that are specifically engineered for this purpose, usually using long-fibre cotton batting.

Toilet paper is short fiber wood pulp from softwoods, and it's not a consistent filtering medium because it was never meant for that use. I've heard where the paper fibers disintegrate and get out into the oil system, and much mayhem occurs...

If you have an engine that already has low oil pressure problems because of wear and age, do NOT add a bypass filter. They tap into the main oil gallery, go through the filter, and dump the filtered oil back to the crankcase. That small flow of oil taken out of the supply to the bearings might be enough to cause starvation problems.
