Hood Latch Cable

Given the excellent security provided in my 1993 Toyota Truck, changing a broken hood latch cable looks to be a daunting task. The typical Haynes and Chiltons are no help. Is there any simple way of unlatching the hood without destroying the grill?

Depends on which end broke - if it snapped at the release handle end, get a screwdriver to remove the handle, and a pair of needle nose pliers to pull on the stub of cable.

If it broke at the latch end, you may have to rig up a long chunk of steel rod with a hook to trip the latch from below, and tape a cheap CCTV camera to the end of the arm so you can see what you're trying to grab. Make like you're playing a video game...

Get a matching year truck where you can get the hood open to see what you need to grab on the hood latch and which direction to pull it. You can also use the study vehicle to design your release tool, with the advantage of access from above to make bends and adjustments.

Might call your local Toyota dealers and/or local locksmiths. They've dealt with this a few times before ;-) and may have advice - or they've already built their nifty tool that is available, the rental will cost you one six-pack of their favorite libation.
