left turn signal stays on

my 99 tacoma left turning light comes on when you press the brake pedal. if you have the left turn signal light on and press the brake pedal it becomes just a solid light and stops blinking until you take your foot off the brake. any suggestions

i would start by replacing the rear bulb if its a dual element bulb it sounds like a short between brake light and left signal hots
