I wired a 9V battery to a 12V plug (total of about $3) and stuck it in the 12V port (or you could use the cig lighter) of my 2000 Tundra, before I disconnected the battery. After changing the battery, all of the computer and radio settings were saved. I've seen similar ready-made ones for up to $30.
The last time I changed a vehicle's battery without using my home made gadget, I lost all the radio settings and the computer settings. Losing the radio settings was no big deal but the vehicle failed a smog test four days later because the computer hadn't completely reset. I've used my gadget since with 100% positve results.
