Search For Bearing is On!

I took someone's advice from this list and had the bearing pressed out of the Fan Pulley Bracket for an '88 4Runner with a 3VZE motor. So far, that is as far as I have gotten as the folks at the shop that pressed it out searched all their bearing catalogs and could not find a replacement. So, if anyone on the list has a guess as to where I might find such an animal, I am all ears!



The number on the end of the bearing assembly is:



W7RO89A



I am pretty sure that is an alpha 'O' and not a zero.



This number is on the end of the shaft in the assembly opposite the letter 'L'. The seal on the end of the assembly says "KOYO" on one side (12 o'clock) and "JAPAN" on the other. The assembly is about three inches long. This is made up of a cylindrical bearing housing that is about two inches long and one inch in diameter with a one-half inch shaft protruding about an inch out of one end of the bearing housing.



Any help is appreciated. This could save me several hundred dollars.



In the meantime, I have the names of several bearing shops that I am going to call on Friday.

Did you do a search to find that Koyo is an Emerson company located in NC?

That number won't help you find the bearing. Your best approach might be to take the bearing into a bearing supply shop and let them look at it. They can probably ID it by sight.

No - I had not done that. Thank-you for the information. I filled out their web page with a desription of the bearing and requested a quote.

You are probably correct that the number on the end of the shaft is of little use. Certainly, it hasn't shown up in any of the books/electronic catalogs checked thus far.

A bearing broker here in town has provided me with the contact information for four companies in a nearby town. As I said in my original posting, I will try each of them tomorrow.

Opinions on whether or not I will be able to find a replacement for this bearing assembly run the gamut. The fellow in the machine shop said that it should not be a problem while his colleagues at the parts counter (as well as a mechanic from another shop) were highly skeptical that I will be able to find a source for what appears to be an assembly that is very specific to my particular application.

But, nothing ventured . . . nothing gained. I will let you know how it goes.

I'll vote for the bearing shop too. Hard to imagine they'd want to (and pay) to use a really oddball size for that application.

Is it possible to do a little machining so a standard bearing would fit? That way if it ever goes out again you would be able to find what you need. Otherwise, how much time and effort are you willing to invest in the attempted repair of what you have (if you can), as opposed to just buying the correct part (which will probably last the rest of the life of the truck)???

For $658, I can devote a bit of time to the endeavour. Besides, if I find the right bearing and have it pressed in at the machine shop, it should last just as long as a 'new' bracket assembly.

And, part of it is spite. I am growing tired of being held hostage by Toyota for their parts. I would like to win this one battle even if I know I can never win the war. So far, there have been some people that are willing to help out in my effort and most of them are doing it for spite as well. There is no love lost between Toyota and the local parts stores.

As I pointed out to a fellow who deals in bearings in a nearby berg, the bearing may be available from somewhere because Toyota is still selling the bracket assembly. Also, there were a ton of these engines sold up until

1995 with this same bracket on each one of them (probably.) Some bearing factory somewhere produced a bunch of these things and there ought to be a couple left over somewhere. I just have to find where - thus far, I have had no luck.

Meanwhile . . . the search goes on . . .

As I mentioned, perhaps some machining of the ID of the pully and/or the shaft diameter would size it so a "standard" bearing would work, maybe one from another make idler system...
