Shifting from 2wd to 4wd in '85 Toyota pickup

I drive an '85 4wd Toyota 1/2 ton standard bed with a manual transmission. I have never driven a car with free-wheeling hubs before and I am not exactly sure how to use them. I know that they need to be locked before you can drive in 4wd but what about shifiting out of 4wd?

Today I couldn't shift out of 4wd. In the end I had to set the hubs to free, drive forward a few feet and then push the shift lever to 2h. As far as I know driving with the 4wd drive engaged and the hubs at free is bad for the truck. If anyone knows the proper way to shift out of 4wd please let me know.

Thanks, Wolfgang

Yes, you must have the hubs in to "shift on the fly". you can shift out of 4WD on the fly also. As for taking it out of 4WD, you have it wound up a bit, not unusual, while pushing the shifter toward 2WD, drive forward and snap the throttle a bit or back up, do this while applying some light force to the transfer shifter. As for driving with the hubs in free and transfer in 4WD, no harm. Driving with one hub locked can cause some quick wear on the pinion/spyder gears. Also to lube the front diff periodically, at a stop, even with the hubs in free, pop it into

4Hi (you can do this with hubs in free as long as your stopped) now drive it around for several miles and take it out anytime, even while moving.
