Starts, does not run

5-18-04 1924 EDT Help please.

88 Pickup, 22RE. Starts, runs a few seconds and stops. Will do it right away again. Air flow flapper is free(not stuck), fuel pump runs, I have 12+ volts at the hot connection at the coil, I can find no openings in the air tube. No diagnostic codes set. What should I check next? This came on suddenly, no previous poor running, etc. Can the fuel filter cause this? Thanks. Ed

Ed,

Did this happen right after it was parked after getting gas?

yes. and so can any pinched fuel line. and so can the distributor by being a couple of degrees too slow (it'll catch on the mix that is there, but will fail to keep up with the flow) which brings me to rule number one (as I have had it explained to me) fix the cheapest part first and work from there. In your case it is the fuel filter

I'm not familiar with Toyota ignitions, but on older cars there was a ballast resistor used to keep the points from burning, while full current was used to the ignition when starting. With the change to electronic ignition, on some Fords (don't hit me) there was, and may still be, two wires to the ignition module, one for start and one for run. If the run wire was shorted, the motor would start and quit when the key was turned back from start to run. The start wire gave more current than the run wire.

5-20-04 0923 EDT Thank you for all your replies. It is still not resolved. This morning I jumpered the fuel pump so it would stay running with the key on. Still acts the same. Yesterday I removed the fuel return hose, moved the AFM flapper and it ran a good stream of fuel into a can. I don't have a fuel pressure meter, but I was not able to stop the flow with my finger on the end of the hose. Also I cleaned up the battery terminals, the ground was a little loose.

So I am leaning toward an ignition problem. Ideas, please?

Thanks. Ed

Greetings,

I had a 1986 Camray that had a similar problem. I would be driving along and after about 20 mins it would die. Leave it for an hour and it would start and run for about 20 mins. It turned out to be the pick up coil inside the distributor. It would heat up, open and then cool down. I noticed that when it quit the tac went to zero. It could be that you are having a similar problem. Might want to check its resistance. If I remember, there is a connector that comes out of the distributor. East to get to. Toyota wanted $100 to change out, diagnostics, parts and labor.

Good luck, Bill

Sounds like you're getting cold-start injector but then no main injectors. I wouldn't think the fuel filter is the problem (if it was carb'd -- maybe). The filter for this thing is not cheap (somewhere above $40) and supposedly it's made never to wear out.

Past similar problems that I eventually solved was low fuel pressure and bad brushes in the alternator. Fuel pressure is self explanatory. The bad brushes caused the alternator not to supply a voltage to run the fuel pump after the starting sequence. Is the alt. light on during the short time it runs?

Today I checked the AFM, circuit opening relay, main relay. It will run with the fuel pump jumpered at the diagnostic with the AFM disconnected. So I suspect a wiring issue somewhere. Still looking. Thanks for all the ideas. Ed

Maybe the problem is at the connector where the wires are bent around..

6-13-04 Dealer determined it was the computer. Had dirt/water in it? Running fine with a used computer now. Thanks for all your ideas. Ed
