i am trying to replace the stereo in my 96 4runner (model A56807) with a very similar stereo from a new Echo (model A56814). they are both double din CD/Cassette/Radio combo units, that came factory installed.
the problem is that the plug in my 4runner doesn't match the pinout on the back of the new stereo (A56814). I called the dealer and they said they can't help me. I find that hard to believe.
Other than having to go to the junkyard and find one of these newer plugs, what are my options? is there an adapter that i can purchase? if so where?

I recently installed a Pioneer AM/FM-CD player in my '94 4runner. I bought an adapter wiring harness at Best Buy for about $19 to interface the factory wiring to the new unit. There are also these wiring kits on the web, you just have to get the right search going.

TB I know exactly what your going through. Your new stereo probably uses a 15 or 20 pin connector and your old harness is a combo 10 pin and 6 pin. Or your new one is 20 pin and the harness is 15 pin. Adapters for the 20 pin are really hard to find. Dealers can order a theft repair kit for the unit you want to install and it will contain the correct adapter and wiring diagram. However, there is a faster solution. first go to the following link:

one reference page contains everything you need to know. It haspictures and descriptions of all Toyotas stereos, amps, harness typesand connections.
You will probably need two adapters, one to plug into head unit to convert the pin out to individual wires and one to mate with the existing harness to convert those pins to wires. Then just connect the wires per the codes that came with the adapters. The 15, 10 & 6 pin adapters are pretty easy to find on the net or at stereo installation places. The 20 pin (I finally found yesterday) you can get from: PAGAN CAR AUDIO

Most of the stereos in that link are OEM; don't they need a code to make them work again? I have a OEM stereo that I took from '96 Camry, and I couldn't install it because it needed a code.
where can I find those codes?

i can't really see the pins on this connector, but it sort of looks like what I need. anyone care to comment?

Count the pins, there are two plugs in the 4runners. One on the back of some radios are amp plugs. More pins than any kit. if you have this, keep digging it should be bolted to the wall behind the radio and lower. It looks like a
4x5 box with heat sinks. plugged into the factory amp is the proper cable. You can tell the difference, it will be about half the amount of pins.
