1997 4Runner security code

Hi all, Just bought a very nice 1997 4Runner with only 62,000 miles. I had a local shop do the timing belt, but they disconnected the battery, now the stereo shows a security code. The stereo is a model 56807. The Toyota dealer wasn't any help. Anyone know how to reset the security code? Thanks, Dean

Unless RayO has advice, it appears you'd HAVE to visit a dealer...

The Toyota dealers are the only ones that have the book with the secret master unlock codes - perhaps you need to try another dealer?

If it's already locked up and you want to try to find the owner set code, try the obvious ones that an owner might use - the last digits of the VIN forward and backward, the digits in the license plate...

If it hasn't been too long, you might be able to track down the previous owners and ask them.

Or try some old-school schmoozing, some "Social Engineering" with your local dealer - go in and do your research for a new car or truck, let them know you're in the market to buy in six months or a year or two - tell them the truth. Figure out what options you want or need, and find out when the annual changeovers happen so you can time your odds of getting the vehicle optioned the way you want it...

But then you mention the little problem you have right now in your conversation with the Sales Manager. They may have a much different attitude than your last visit, and be more willing to help you solve this problem when they can see the long term benefits.

For obvious reasons, the dealer is not going to give you the code over the phone. You have to bring the vehicle in and show proof of ownership for them to unlock the radio for you.
