Weird problem

Vehicle is a 1996 toyota rav4, 5 speed, 180,000 miles. My backup lights didn't work. My toyota mechanic replaced the switch, but that didn't solve the problem. After two hours of checking all the wiring and finding nothing wrong, he discovered the rod or lever inside the tranny wasn't making contact with the plunger on the backup light switch. So that means a teardown of the tranny is in my future. Anyone ever heard of this before? Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks

You might want to check the fuse for your back up lights. Check your owner's manual for which fuse it is and the correct amps if you need to replace it. This might sound kind of strange considering a mechanic checked it out but they've missed more obvious things.

The fuses are fine. The back up lights work if i push the plunger on the switch in with my finger with the connector attached, but the lights don't work with the switch installed in the tranny. Thanks

The cheap but inconvenient fix is a small toggle switch to control the lights located somewhere convenient to the driver.

Every day is a good day- it's just that some are better than others.
