1970 Bug rear brakes

My rear brake drums got hot after about 10 miles. They got hot to the touch. I have replaced both wheel cyl. and the wheels seem to roll with little drag. Car set for about 1 year and drums are rusted, could this be the problem? Will it wear in with time? Thanks for any help.

It could be hoses. Those rear brake hoses are now over a qtr-century old! Old ones swell up inside so much that brake fluid can't return to the M/C. That makes the brakes drag and heat up, aggravating the problem.

If you wear off the rust and adjust the shoes and still have the problem, I'd change hoses (ugly job). Do the fronts while you're at it.

I'm not trying to be funny, but I've never seen any brakes that didn't get hot after driving 1/2 mile if you use them much at all. Do they not work well, or are you just worried about them getting hot after you use them? What do you mean by "hot?" Glowing hot? Sure they'll be hot to the touch if you've used them.

One of the first things I did for my Baja was replace most of the brake-system, including the hoses. This winter I will be bringing my Ghia back to road-worthiness and will replace it's noses as well. As long as you are up on the brake bleeding procedure, it's pretty straightforward.
