Ok, So I now have my fuel gauge working for the most part, so I went out and filled the tank to make sure the gauge was reading correctly. This is the first time that I've totally filled it up. The odor is overwhelming. I took it out for a long drive (30+ miles) to see if consuming some gas would alleviate the problem - no such luck. When I replaced the sending unit, I replaced the gasket, however I have removed the sending unit a couple of times to troubleshoot the gauge problem. Could this be part of the issue? Any other suggestion?

sending unit bolt threads all good? You did use those plastic washers under the bolt heads (all except one), right?
See if you have a leak under the tank, where the outlet is. You can see in there from under the front fender, with a flashlight.
See that your gas cap gasket is in good shape. Also know that the cap MUST NOT BE VENTED TYPE. It would leak gasoline out onto the fender in turns, when the fuel in the tank sloshes around.

i was recently deemed a "dumbass" when i pointed out that the caps are not vented.... there are alot of *experts* on some of the vw forums, that don't know diddly...
