beetle engine

I was told a while back that you could fit a porsche 3.2 litre twin turbo engine into a beetle without serious modification, although it would need a wheelie bar. Is this right? I've been thinking for the past year or so to restore the bug that's rotting away in my parent's garden but it would have to be done my way. What's the most powerful engine that could be fitted into a 1973 beetle? Cheers, F.

I don't know about a Bug, but I was at a car show recently where some guy stuck a 455 Olds engine in a squareback. Looked like an engine that came with a car wrapped around it.

It won't fit as a bolt-in. The most straightforward installation would have the rear two cylinders and merge header sticking so far out the back you would have to have a red warning flag on it.

And if it was made into a two seater allowing the extra room to move it towards the front of the car, possibly even having to turn the engine around through 180 degrees would that allow it to be placed inside the (new) engine bay comfortably?

If you've got any experiences of what's been stuck in one could you let me know, and what amount of work was required to make it fit? I was thinking along the lines of a 2.6 16V job... I definitley want more than 2litre 16V :-)

There are something like 70 engines that can be adapted to the VW transmission. See Kennedy Enterprises. But get thee to

Gawd, yes! Remember them? They hung out the back like Gerbil balls. Funny, but they put out a mere 115HP, no? We have T1 engines pushing 200hp now.

I'm probably wrong but as far as I know the original poster still didn't say what his intentions for this were. Does he want it for a daily driver or for a weekend cruiser or all-out drag car? Unless you guys who know engines and stuff know the answer to that and more the question is just too open-ended to be answered in anything less than a novel. A good exercise maybe would be to find out the weight of the car (plus the estimated weight of the engine to be used) and then think about the amount of hp the engine in question would put out, then do the old weight/hp ration calculation and then find a production car that has that kind of weight/hp ratio and go test drive it. Get it up to about 45 mph or so in 3rd gear and then floor the gas and see what kind of power you're talking about. How much does a bug weigh anyway? I know the weight varied through the years, but say it weighs 2700 pounds or so... Then say you have 100 hp... 27 lb/hp... Now think of a common car like a Mustang GT. What do they weigh? They put out around 230 hp or so depending on the year. Yeah, I know there are other factors involved, I'm just kinda thinking out loud. I'd bet that if I had a 150 hp engine in my '63 with all of its fiberglass parts on it that I could "take" a mid 80's Mustang GT with

230 hp or so up to about 90 mph or so assuming my tranny could hold up to that kind of power, of course. Could probably beat one in a quarter mile race. Just thinking out loud because this is interesting to me and I'd be interested in feedback on my comments.

I have e-mailed loads of companies in the UK and none seem interested enough to reply to any of my questions. They either have too much work or too much money. Any ideas where to get them from?

Cos I have no idea what they are. I know a T5 is a type of volvo that police use :-) Is it similar?
