Mark, Yes fluid will leak out but not to much. You will need to bleed the brake lines to get the air out also.

Yes, you will almost sure have to bleed all your 4 brakecylinders. Make sure the bleedscrews kan be loosened.

Else: I have changed several brakestoplightswitches using an other method. Check brakefluidlevel and top up if necessary Get some rubber glooves on. Loosen the defect sw a few turns. Get somebody to apply mediumlight constant pressure to the brakepedal. You loosen the switch slightly undtil fluid comes out around the threats. (Watch out NOT to get fluid into your eyes or on your skin) The brakepedal goes down to the floor during this. When the brakepedal is down to the floor, your buddy has to keep the pedal down. You put in a the new switch and tighen it. Your buddy can now release the pedal. Check the firmness of the pedal. Mostly this worked for me..... Check the funktion of the brakes.

Seriously, a little fluid will dribble out (not a gusher). This is a good thing since the fluid being expelled prevents air from entering; I have never had to bleed brake lines after changing switch(es). YMMV

I watched a Volkswagen dealership in Braunschweig, Germany, replace a brake light switch on my '78 Polo (long since gone), and even they didn't bleed the brakes afterwards, so it seems this is standard procedure.

Just have your replacement parts close at hand when the old switches come out and you won't have any trouble.
