Buying bug in Langley BC, driving it home to Edmonton. (long)

Hi Everyone,

I just booked a flight to Vancouver for this Saturday morning. I am purchasing a 1974 Super Sunbug from the owner in Langley, BC (Canada). Call me crazy, but I'm buying this car before looking at it. The owners sent me about 30 digital pictures of it, so I have a pretty good idea what I'm buying. I have been looking for a sunroof super for over 10 years now, and I have had so many other good prospects fall through my fingers over the years that I'm not letting this one get away on me. I just hope the rust isn't worse than I think, but thats a risk I'm willing to take.

Its a 15 hour drive back home, and the car is driveable, but I'm wondering if anyone that lives along the way (going home through Kamloops and Jasper) would be able to help me in case I have trouble? I'm bringing some tools, extra throttle cable, points, condensor, plugs etc, basically whatever I can jam into 2 suitcases on the flight (WestJet). I might also purchase a roadside assistance membership just in case as well.

I plan on staying in a hotel overnight half way, probably between Kamloops and Jasper. Not exactly sure where yet, I'll see how the trip goes, and how much time I have.

My itinerary is something like this: Arrive in Vancouver at 7:34am. Have breakfast and then take a cab to Langley. Probably arrive there around

9:00am. Pick up the car, change the oil and make any other required adjustments. At this point, I want to take a drive to the coast since I have never been to the Pacific and spend some time there, taking pictures etc. Then sometime around 2:00 I would like to be on the road home.

The owners are being very helpful, even giving me an extra set of tires/rims for the trip so unless something very unlikely happens like the engine seizing up, I should be fine. However, if there is anyone living along the way that wouldn't mind helping me if I have problems, I would really appreciate it.

This is going to be a very memorable trip for me, I plan on taking my camcorder and doing a little "documentary". My wife is calling this "Ryans Big Adventure".

If you guys can think of any extra parts I should be bringing with me, your suggestions are welcome.

Thanks, wish me luck....

Alternator belt fire extinguisher duct tape and bailing wire flashlight, cell phone, Triple A or the equivalent and check in with the Type2.com people as David recommends.

Bon voyage!

If it were me, I'd be sure to check all fuel lines/connections in the engine compartment very carefully or, even better, just replace the lines outright and install clamps just to be safe. Check the carb and fuel pump fittings to make sure they aren't loose and maybe go ahead and safety wire them in place. Other than a wreck, the last thing you want to happen is an engine fire. Also, call me paranoid, I'd pick up a fire extinguisher (or two) once you get there to have with you on the ride back.

Also, do a Google search of the archives on "spare parts". There have been some recent threads on the subject.

Good luck!

I just signed up at Type2 for the rescue service. That is a great website. I found about 4 people along the route I'm taking, I will email them and ask if they will be around and be able to help me if I need it.

Good suggestions about the fan belt and fuel lines and such. I will defintely pick this stuff up ahead of time, cheap insurance.

Thanks Kirin,

I have to take a cab from the airport to Langley. I imagine this will be expensive, unless there is a shuttle to a hotel in Langley, do you know of one?

Which airport are you coming into, Vancouver or Abbotsford?

Vancouver, we would have landed in Abbotsford, but it was 3 times the price, and it was a very late arrival.
