65 bug: question about reversed electrical wiring

Hello. I was wondering if anyone knew why my 65bug seems to be wired in reverse? The negative battery cable goes to my starter which spins fine and gets the correct 6v of juice. What happens if I reverse them to what would seem like the correct way? My starter spins but seems to spin very slowly and wont actually crank the car as if the battery were half dead but I am positive it is completely charged. I hope you guys have a clue to help me :) Thanks

At one time, the generator may have gotten polarized backwards, resulting in wrong generator polarity.

Get you voltmeter out and see if the battery poles are reversed (neg voltage out of the pos post) or whether the cables are on backwards. Then measure the charging voltage and see which polarity it is.

But, AFAIK, backwards polarity feeding the starter motor should not affect its torque. Check that the transmission ground strap is in good condition (not corroded or loose). Actually measure the voltage at the starter motor terminal (to engine case) while cranking. That can tell you if there is a lot of voltage drop. If all checks, it's possible that the starter pinion bushing (in the bellhousing) is worn.
