Do you need insulation when installing a headliner?

Am i supposed to put insulation on the roof before i put on the headliner? or can i just live it blank? just headliner and glue? what are your suggestions? what will happen if i put the headliner on with no insulation?

You had best install it thin and tight to the steel of the roof. If it falls down it will look like crap, strain the ribs, ruin your day.
