engine tin

Hi all,

I was cleaning some engine tin today when I noticed that this piece of "sled tin" has a hole in it. See:

The hole is located under the thermostat and looks to be factory made, but I don't understand its purpose? The engine it was on was an 1200cc from about 1965 btw.

Anyone knows what its for?

Greetings,

Probably so the owner could easily replace or remove his thermostat. It does not look that "factory" to me, but then maybe it is. ;-)

Hole does look a little irregular for a factory job, were early thermostats adjustable and hole was for easier access?. Oz John (one of many John,s)!!!

Thermostat adjustments make sence, but I just know that my hack would be much uglier, so I assumed it was factory(ish) ;-)

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions guys!
