Fan shroud louvres?

What are they? I was told mine were in the closed position so the guy told me he fixed mine in the open position. I heard this funny noise after 500 miles and felt back up around the fan and pulled out a frayed red wire!

Was this tied open with wire or is the wire road crud? If louvres are closed does this inhibit performance?

Are you talking about the internal flaps controlled by your thermostat? Many people feel these can be removed entirely, but the feeling is that the VW engineers designed these for a good reason and the system should be left intact....assuming everything is in the proper working order. Fred67bug

The lovers are controlled by a thermostat (right under side side of engine - brass coloured bellows). Often the thermostat is removed or the control rod to the flaps is damaged or obstructed. This would cause an over heating problem. When cold the flaps will be closed -- only when the engine heats up will they open. If you are in the south you may not need the flaps -- they could be wired to the open position. VW spent hugh $ designing the cooling system - I would ensure it works per factory install.

If they are closed you may kiss your engine good bye. You will not cool.

I have the thermostatic controlled flap on my '69 (Thanks again, Scott) although the lid is from a '73 Super, with the four set vents in the lid. I wanted all the cooling I could get, out here in the desert, although if mine stuck closed, I don't think it would have that much of a detrimental effect.

If anyone is unclear on what this is, here's a link.

Clip from your project page:

ETKA lists this as being there on chassis numbers 156 2000 001=20 and forward (1303 convertibles -76 and later).
