Floor Pan sealers?

Hey folks, As I near completion of my restoration on the wife's 1976 Super Conv. I want to thank those of you who have responded to my frequent questions. Most of you have forgotten more about VW's than I'll ever know and you wisdom has been invaluable. Thanks. Of course there is another question... there appears to be two types of sealer used on the old floor pans. One was a pliable black rubbery substance that was still tacky after umpteen years that was used on the pan to body gasket. The other was a hardened white substance where the pans were welded to the chassis. It may have been a sealer or just something to smooth the contour of the joint...or both. What are these two adhesives and where do I get them? Thanks again, Charles

On the pan to body, I think just the (new) rubber gasket is fine. You can use windshield urethane if you want to *really* seal it & not take it back apart. On the joints, use a brushable seam sealer. These are after you have the pan painted, or after primer before paint for the seam sealer. ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver"

the pans are sealed at the "joint" near the tunnel with seam sealer...you can get it in a tube or brushable...i prefer brushable...you can also get it in paintable and unpaintable...get paintable...it is available at any autobody paint supply store...the pan to body seal should be just a dry rubber seal...it is a bulb type seal...a flat seal with a "bulb" on each side of it that compresses...i used a urethane sealant (in roll form, 1/4 inch thick) that is used to put the sections of cooling towers together....but it will be a bear to ever get apart or off the pan...hehe..but it will NEVER leak.... Brand names are 3M or AVECO - I use the cauking gun tube and smooth it out using lacquer thiner.

Has anyone tried it? Ad copy makes it sound like best thing since sliced bread. Been happy with their paint-the little that I've used it... ...but I don't live in a road salt area anymore and also now have a sheltered garage, so the expected rust hasn't re-appeared. Mainly wondering if it really stays flexible. TIA Greg
