Fresh Air Lever Knob Removal Puzzle

71 bus.

To remove the instrument panel, Bentley's states clearly, "Press out the plastic pins in the knobs for the fresh air control levers, then remove the knobs."

Simple. Direct. Who could not follow that procedure?

Me, apparently.

I'm looking all over the two blue and two red knobs and for the life of me, I can't find any plastic pins. These guys are made of some vaguely squishy plastic material that seems to have been molded onto the ends of the levers. The levers appear to be bent at a right angle inside the knob, making the assembly pretty much un-assemble-able.

Is there some hidden knowledge that involves Masonic rites and secret handshakes that I need to be initiated into in order to receive the knowledge to illuminate the dark mysteries of these four bland blobs of plastic?

Never mind. Found it. Figure 10-1 in the Body and Frame section clearly shows the plastic plugs midway along the levers. So the sentence I quoted above (from the bottom of page 39 in Electrical System) is inaccurate.

If memory serves me correctly, the plastic pins are actually holding the levers under the dash panel, accessible by sticking ones head under the bottom of the dash. The pins are some kind of polyethylene plastic, I think. I seem to recall grinding off one jaw of an old pair of needlenose pliers so that I apply enough pressure to the pins to remove and reinstall them.
