Fuel issues - 1969 Bug

Hey guys,

I've got a problem with my '69 Bug that I can't figure out. This is probably a good question for the old carburetor pros. Anyway, car has

1600 single port engine with fairly new (about 4 years old) Solex/ Brosal H30/31 carb. Ok, car runs fine in most conditions except for inclines, and especially my driveway which is a decent size hill. It acts like there is too much gas in the carb and it will shut off or run very poorly. It's very hard to keep it running to get it up driveway. Today, it stalled at the bottom just as the incline begins, and I got out and noticed some liquid draining between what *appears* to be the manifold and top of the head on driver's side. The liquid would have to be gasoline, right?

Over the past few weeks, the problem has not gotten any better. I have re-adjusted the carb to make sure it is in tune and I also replaced the needle valve, for fear that it was sticking open.

Any ideas? If so, it would be much appreciated! I have an original 30 Pict 2 that works ok, but the throttle shaft bushing has quite a bit of wear. I am going to put this on today to see what happens.

Thanks for any ideas and suggestions.

I would check two things (but what do I know, anyway?)

Float level and check for manifold leaks.

I agree; check float level. With engine cold, start and run for a few seconds. Then take the carb top off. Level should be roughly 3/4" below rim.

Does this only happen when engine is hot, like after driving a while? If so, then it is likely fuel boiling in the bowl. It will percolate out the brass vent tube, especially when headed uphill.

Some claim that extending the vent tube with a bit of hose will help.

Very high fuel pressure (can be caused by high temps too) can overcome even a good needle valve.

Do some detective work. It's not an easy problem to solve.

you may need the thicker copper washer under the needle valve...do as Speedy Jim suggested to test the float level...make sure the car is fairly level...
