Fuel starving?

Bug cut out on me about halfway home the other night after a little bit of studdering. Limped home by staying at fairly low RPM after I noticed it would always cut out 10-15 seconds after hitting cruising speed (40-50 on the roads I'm using, a high 3rd gear). If I let it sit and idle it never stalls, least not within 5-10 minutes.

I've checked everything I know to check but it still likes to hesitate after holding a fairly high RPM. If it does stall it will take a few seconds of cranking to fire back up but runs fine once it does.

Swapped in-line filter, gas tank is venting, getting no hiss of air when I open the tank, carb bowl has fuel and the fuel is clean. Pump is pumping fuel though I haven't tested PSI as I'm not sure how to do that. It gives a pretty decent belch of gas when I hand crank the engine.

What else do I look at? I did a full tune up since the day was pretty nice and it was about due anyways, but it didn't help.

Vehicle is a stock '66.

Had a similar problem on my bug. My problem was the in tank screen was getting plugged by rust/debris and it was shutting down going 60+ mph on the highway but would run fine around town. I would suggest pulling your tank and cleaning the inside and also getting a new outlet tube and screen for the tank. You might also look into a tank restoration kit while you have it out. Worked wonders for me!!

'66 has a mesh screen in the tank outlet. Could also be clogged main line (in tunnel).

Pull hose off pump inlet fitting. See if fuel will run out freely by gravity. Jack up frt of car if necessary.

...could be low fuel pressure.

Connect a vacuum gauge/fuel pump pressure tester between the fuel pump and the carb. ...for single carb, the psi should be from 3 to 5 psi.
