my crankshaft is getting rusty because I ignorantly stored it in the basement. Is there a chemical I can use that won't be harmful to the metal, or what is the best method of approach for this?

find some extra fine emory cloth....in a pinch 0000 steel wool will work(but its very fine and may take awhile)...you want to avoid taking any metal off...just "polish" off the rust....

mebbe some wd-40 and a scotch brite pad. they come in different "grits"
Ditto. I was going to say the same method.
Oil it right away, to prevent furthur rust. Take it to an automotive machine shop after the oil has had a few days to soak in; see if they can polish it and get it smooth again. If the journals have rust pits that won't polish out, then it will have to be ground to the next smaller size, or exchanged for a reground crank.
