Impossible to find part

Hey Guys,

I'm in desperate need of a Wire Pushrod retainer for a 2000cc 1980 Westy (the crooked coat hangar looking thing that sits between the pushrod tubes and the rockers). I just bought this van and found she had a major oil leak from the push rod tubes .... I replaced all the tubes and seals without any trouble just for it to start leaking again as soon as I run the engine for a few minutes. After doing the job 3-4 more times thinking I was doing something wrong I looked in the Haynes book one more time and realized that the pushrod retainer is missing so as soon as any pressure in the crank case pushes on the tubes they start leaking again. I've tried all over the net and when I do find a retailer that acutally has the part (not many - CIP doesn't even carry them) I'm crushed to find out that they don't actually have it in stock and are unable to get it. I've tried the VW dealers here in town and they're also unable to get it ....

Can anyone by chance point me in the right direction to get 2 of these clips?

I'm very close to putting hose clamps on the cylinder head side of the pushrode tubes so they're unable to be pushed out of the bores on the crank case .... Would anyone advise against this?

Thanks!

Jon

Somebody has a great pile of 'em out in the garage ...

If you get really desperate, I have an assortment of stainless music wire and you can make one.

I knew I could count on a reply from you Jim!

I thought the hose clamp was a decent idea too. It's nice to hear someone of your calibur in agreeance with me (me being such a noobie - this is about the only mechanical work I've ever done on a car - next is my brand spank'n new starter - any advice?). I talked to the guys at BJP Resorations in Quebec (while hunting for the part) and mentioned the hose clamp idea to them and apprently they've seen it quite a bit - in his opinion it works better than the original part.

I'd still like to get a hold of the real deal but in the mean time I'm going to give this a shot - if it does in fact solve my problem I'll just leave it and shelve the true part if I ever do find it!

Did you use the spring loaded tubes? or did you use stock type and remove the heads?

Where is "agreeance"?

Man, which one of the goofy metal heads started the fad of using that bogus word?

I think Jim is actually in *agreement* with you.

Maybe I'm just wierd but that sounds so much better. I shouldn;t bag on anybody, because I am a terrible typist , and often mis-type stuff.

Nevermind Jon, I just couldn't let it go.............LOL

You are thinking of a type 1 engine. He has a type 4 engine. Totally different pushrod tubes.....

Uhh ... I was actually looking for info/suggestions related to a part .=2E. It's amazing how people tend to pick others apart when they're hiding behind a monitor.
