Is this too much to pay for a Engine?

I took my 1971 Autostick Super Beetle in to be worked on and the repair bill is getting high. the Engine is only firing on 3 Cylinders. He has a rebuilt Autostick engine for 1500 + exchange for one of mine. Anyeone know of a cheaper place ot get a rebuilt Autostick engine?

Will be happy when this car is driveable.

Thanks Steven

Did he say *why* it's firing on 3? Did he do a compression test?

BTW, there is nothing special about an autostick engine vs 4-spd engine.

Just for comparison purposes, here is a complete longblock

1600cc which is brand new and original VW:

There are many other parts houses which supply rebuilds for less than that.

I lied.

A plug in the case is reversed (trivial) and the oil pump is different; you need the autostick oil pump.

He just said it was firng on three but didn't take ie apart to see why the other one was not firing.

So should I pass on the 1500 one he has? I have plenty of Autostick parts/cars. I know where I can get a 68 COmplete car running but bad brakes for 1K but I'd want it to re-sell.

Thanks Steven

If the guy can't figure out why it's only firing on three cylinders, and thinks he has to take it apart to figure out why, I'm not so sure that I'd want him swapping my engine. There could be any number of simple reasons for it missing on one cylinder. I'd hate to pay for a (hopefully) rebuilt engine just to fix a bad plug wire.

He may have told me why it was and I don't remember. he has worked on VW's for 35+ years so he is good at what he does.. I'll probably drive it like it is for now. That is when it is finished.
