Liquid cooled ACVW heads

Aw man, hardware lust again!

Yeah, but if it works, who cares?

been available for some time now.... neat idea.... seem to be a great idea...to your average ACVW driver it would mean another added(and unnecessary) system... s*it most ACVW owners can't keep their factory cooling systems working properly, i don't see how they could handle two cooling systems...hehe

Two cooling systems - yup, good point. The engine in question is an aircraft engine getting lots of breeze, so the cooled heads are really only half the picture. Good for ya for seeing that. A ground vehicle would still need the air cooling.

Water cooling a rear-engined vehicle requires a radiator and some inventive tubing, I think.

No problem. I've got a Kelmark with a rear engine, plumbed to a front radiator. In a Bug it could be put under the front bumper or in the spare tire well. It has been done often.

Done often, or done well? Sounds like a hideous kludge to me.

HMMMMMMMM.......!!

Hope the sales grow, and they drop the price :)

For a lot less money, I could have more power and a smoother running engine by adapting in a 2.2L Subaru into my Bug. For what my engine cost, only a few bucks more and I could have converted it to Subaru power already.

I've seen it done well. In the Kelmark, it's a no-brainer: it's built for a radiator. But we already agreed that the water cooled heads don't mean a person could remove his AC system. Right?

I love that Sub engine. Would love to do that, too.

Over on both STF and Volksrods there are several converted VWs that are running some sort of liquid cooling with radiators up front, out back, underneath, etc. The Subaru swap is a common thing and from what I've seen, most of them are well engineered. Same with the Wankel swaps. On volksrods there are a couple of Bugs with V8s and V6s that have the radiator up from and the motor out back. Just because it is unconventional doesn't mean it is poorly done. Actually, one gy on VR is doing a really cool Eldorado 500cid into a Bug that is really well thought out. He actually even added 12" to the car (width, down the centerline). Just my $.02.

If you hang the 500 in the back, the weight distribution will make the car drive like a turd..

Jan

I'm sure it will probably not handle like a slot car. This guy ran a 350 Chevy in it before he switched to the Caddy set up. He had relocated the battery to the front which would help some with the balance. The Cadillac

500 is only slightly larger than the Chevy dimensionally and at 595lbs with carb (dry weight) is only marginally heavier than an iron head SBC (550-575 dry, depending on options). The nice thing is the Eldo is a longitude mounting so it is more of a mid-engine than rear engine. Check out the build thread if you want

Oh Jan, did you ever get around to opening up that shop down in FL?

Sneaks '68 T1

No shop... it's just a dream :)

I do currently have access to a good sized indoor workshop at work, AC and all.. I've got 2 of our cars there. The mustang is undergoing tranny rebuild, and the nova is getting new pistons and rod bearings.

Just enough to get them going. Can't afford more, wife and I are both possibly losing our jobs. The company is being sold.

Jan

That sucks. Been there, have the bills to show it. I am sure you two will land on your feet. With your skills, I'm sure you will find something fast. I'll put some mojo out there for you two.

I see you sometimes on STF, handing out good info:)

What year Mustang?

Sneaks '68 T1

66 coupe, 289 auto.

The nova is a granny car, 1970, 230ci inline six, 4 doors... I figure a turbo for the nova and two for the mustang should pep them up nicely :) Some day..

Jan

Niccce. I actually am kinda fond of those old Nova 4drs. Make cool sleepers, as long as you put a real rear end under them. Monoleaf....:: shudder::
