odd alternator/reg issue

heyall.

Bay with upright 1600. Alternator, external Bosch reg, std three pin connection ontop of alt plus large red wire.

Alt light has stopped, replaced bulb, still no go, even when engine not running but ign on

Battery voltage seems to be 16v at fast idle, occasionally raising to 18v. I assume reg is toasted, but was still expecting the ignition light to work. I will check that the voltmeter is working tomorrow by checking same on the beetle.

Any confirmation of above would be wonderful, as long as I can get a reg with same fitting...

Sorted it.

Dont assume that the meter is right !. One new battery later, and am getting correct readings from battery, ie 12.5 v ish. Also, dont assume that a new light bulb will work. Another replacement later & I have a dash light which works and an alternator which charges, even though the three pin plastic plug this has disintegrated. Phew.

Now back to trying to get the gearbox filler plug out. Have double nutted, now triple nutted a bolt, but the damn things still wont turn. Any ideas? other than going to buy the most expensive hex key in the world?

weld the nut to the bolt...put the head in the plug, then wrench on the welded nut....works like a charm...

Sounds odd. I see you are in the UK, so is this a factory 1600 w/alternator, or someone's aftermarket install?

With no idiot light, the alternator should not put out anything, but yours does. I wonder why.

Voltage is too high. Why? Is your voltmeter calibrated?
