Alternator cover needed?

I think you will find it will fit after you've changed over the long studs that it secures to from the old alternator, I cant remember but is it a metal one ? if so it sits close to the exhaust, thus protecting it from excessive heat.

Its plastic, so perhaps not used for heat protection.

Any ideas?

I've cooked at least one alternator on a 2cv by leaving the "belt cover" (which is actually cooling ducting) off.

I *know* it was cooked, because there was smoke coming out of it...

Some alternators had a cover with a duct attached to direct air for cooling, but even if this is the case they're not necessary. Don't worry about it, the alternator will work fine without it.

Are the 2cv air-cooled. Maybe something to do with it, if the alternator depends on the engine cooling fan. If the alternator has it's own cooling fan which 99.9% do, then no problem.

Well this is just a simple plastic cover, doesn't have a duct on it.

Its very thick plastic that I guess goes over the alternator to protect it from something. Its hard enough to be like metal.

Do you think this matters?

The mechanic says no, but then if it doesn't then why did Rover put it on?
