I tried to get a license plate for my itty bitty trailer (3.5'X4') on multiple occasions now, two of those times visiting DMV offices after making about 10 phone calls to their offices to figure out how to go about doing so. Each time I dealt with the DMV on the phone or in person, their story changed about how much $ it would cost and what the procedure was to get the plate. Today was the last straw. First thing in the morning I will be removing the license plate bracket from the trailer and just going with no plate at all. I've spoken with multiple co-workers who own trailers who have run with them for years now with no plates (one of the guys has a 16' trailer and uses it weekly) and never gotten pulled over because of no plate, or gotten in any other kind of trouble over it. I withdrew $100 today before I went to the DMV, ready to pay just about all of that to be legal. Their latest twist on the situation drove me over the edge. mario, can you please let me know who you've used for a lawyer in the past so that I can be sure to NOT use them now that the world is against me. I don't want to be completely screwed over by the system like you were. I'm joining the dark side, and need a good lawyer in case I get pulled over. :-P I was hoping to share a good story about how I "beat the system" with y'all, but I've come out as a loser in this one. With $100 cash still in my wallet. *grin*

Hey Travis, it sounds like you're not going to worry about it now but when I bought one of those Harbor Freight trailers a few years ago, there was a `certificate of origin' thingie that came with it (sort of looked like a title) .... and in order to get the tag the DMV office required me to send that certificate back to the Harbor Freight main office and have someone there sign and notorize it. I had mail ordered the trailer so I don't know if they provide this certificate thing when you buy a trailer at an actual store. If you bought it at a store, maybe you could ask them about it there? Or not. :-)
The DMV tag offices in North Carolina have to be the most screwed up in the country.
I got mine online, and yes it had that certificate in it, and the DMV told me I had to mail it back to them, etc, etc. I wanted to be able to use the trailer right away so I tried to get crafty and circumvent the process, and would have been able to, but it would have wound up taking as long to get around it, and cost more, so my "trick" turned out to be just a pain in the butt. I just removed the license plate bracket this morning. They can write me a ticket if they pull me over.
Yep. What a complete and utter crock of sh*t. That's why they're being replaced by online services. Bunch of incompetents that have to call 10 people for anything out of the ordinary. They can kiss my @ss.
