If points are not too bad, I polish them with some Wet/Dry sand paper. a medium grade. leaves a nice "satin " finish.

I used to own a 1971 Chevrolet van.I installed a new set of points.The new set of points did not work, untill I cleaned them with a rag and mineral spirits. cuhulin

yes, there is a coating of oil on new points. to protect them from oxidation until.....
