I did not explain that very well, but the top two holes I drilled were ~4 inches high on the tunnel.

Would you consider switching to a hydraulic clutch?
An interesting idea, but I do not consider a hydraulic clutch all that necessary for a stock bug running a stock engine. And I like the clutch feel of the Bug (that is, until the front clutch tube bracket decided to break.
Those are excellent pics. Thanks for providing the web address. Although I could not tell what - if anything - is in the tunnel opposite (and several inches towards the back) the opening for the pedal cluster.
Is anyone aware if - during the later bug years - VWAG made any changes to the configuration inside the tunnel? I know that around the time of my '74 that the shifter was moved back, as was the hand brake.

So far, no one else has been able to confirm or deny any changes in the tunnel (John Connolly was hoping to get a look inside one and report back to me also???).
I do have one guy here in Australia who tells me that some early "ovals" may have had the clutch tube on the opposite side - but no confirmation.
As to your question - afaik there is nothing on the opposite side (ie the inside of the right hand side of the tunnel), all the attachments are on the inside of the left hand side of the tunnel (that's why I only show the left hand side of the tunnel pics).
When you have the pedal cluster out, grab a torch and a mirror and check it out, for your self and me!

Fuel injected cars have a fuel return line in addition to the supply line that all years got. The return line might be the extra something that you've come across.
