Squeaky Mantec spare carrier

I would suggest you contact mantec and ask them for a new plastic cylinder. I am sure they will be able to assist on that.

Yes! I've had mine for a few years now - it doesn't squeak!

Come to think of it though, the tube into which the plastic cylinder slides on mine is stainless steel and rust free. Have Mantec stopped using stainless for the sliding cylinder housing?

However, if it squeaks, I would suspect it's not staying in alignment as the door swings open.

I suggest slackening off(but not removing) the nut securing the plastic cylinder to the frame, and then open and close the door slowly, watching to see if the bolt moves within it's slot. If it does, then the door hinge axis, and the carrier hinge axis are not parallel. Mine was initially like this when I first fitted it. Deciding which axis to move, and in which direction, I obtained an extra spacer for the lower mounting from Mantec. Problem solved!

Well maybe, but it's the most expensive on the market, so you'd expect it to be right. Having said that when I came to mount it I found the outer skin of my rear cross member did not have the standard holes drilled. (50th Anniv with NAS style rear step/towbar) In fact I found 3 different layouts looking at other Defenders. The Mantec relies on the holes for the rear right grab handle. I just had to line it up from the top bracket as best I could.

No! Mantec told me the moving parts were maintenance free, so I've never lubed them.

I don't believe so. The bushes are nylon, and mine have never needed lubrication.

Nylon bushes should not be lubricated (certainly not with oil or oil based products as they will damage the nylon itself*). If there is a problem then some foriegn body has got in there and could do with being removed.
