Re: Fweemenabling the pea shooters

right. It is when the spot welds break (after many many miles of driving) that the insert starts to rattle and produces that wonderful noise.

I doubt there could be any "shrinkage" going on in there, cause they will expand while the car is warmed up, then contract when the car cools. I don't see how the diameter could shrink over time.

I'm pretty sure the tips are packed with fibreglass as well, maybe that stuff erodes away over time and gives the insert room to rattle around.

So, after this scientific study, I'm not much wiser how > to fweemenable the pea shooters. Any ideas after the > findings stated above?

Find the welds and crack them? ;)

Or wait for nature to take it's course.

Seth is kinda right about this subject................kinda.

basically the inner gets a bit loose with time, and then the fweem is "enabled" ....................I don;t recommend breaking the spot welds, as they never seem to be broken on the ones I remove that are fweeming already. However the packing in between the two tubes gets very loose, thus causing the fweeem sound................if you just shake them a little they should have a small amount of play internally that can be felt as the packing moves around .

enable it?.............I don't recommend trying to. But if you are trying to encourage the sound to happen sooner than later,....................well.......................just fire up the enmgine and let her run a while at home, ................lock the doors and mow the yard or something else that takes your mind away,.................it'll warm up and eventually make the change.

It's kinda like your muffler system has to grow up and go through puberty or something.......................None of us were born 18 years old now were we?

Artificial Intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

That which you call 'fweem', we used to call 'crickets' back in the 70's.

It's funny that people now actually seem to like that sound, because back then we all thought it was perhaps the least endearing characteristic of the beetle. Everybody usually bought an extractor exhaust of some type (I picked up a rudely loud Andeck "Brute") or if they didn't have a lot of cash picked up a pair of the aftermarket tips without the screens inside for a mellower exhaust note.

Don't take this the wrong way but personally I think that every aircooled car needs headers and QP mufflers put on it immediately, but on the other hand if you enjoy that sickly stock exhaust whistle than more power to you. TEHO

Some think that they immediately need a baja kit ;)

Well, my taste is so bad, that in addition to the stock engine and proper fweem, I like the smell inside the bug, sound of the outer door handles and sound of the shifter. All things I remember from the time I was size of a fire extinguisher riding in my grandfathers -73 yellow Beetle 1300.

TEHO? Yes, power is "teho" in finnish. Or is that some usenet-acronym I'm not familiar with?

I know what you're talking about, but couldn't explain it much better. Looking at it with a practical eye, it's probably just a mix of all the parts of the car together, the faint hint of gas in the cabin just after fueling up, maybe mustiness from the horsehair seat padding, or the dry-smelling air that comes from the heaters.

That stuff probably just settles into the interior after a while.

Seems kinda weird to enjoy it, but I'm not gonna question it.

I know the smell you mean, but mine has lost it. It now has cloth seats from Mk1 golf and a carpet set. Must be a mixture of Vinyl and damp !
