recommended fuel?

Being a new *old* VW owner, I have a question about fuel. The last time I drove a VW, leaded fuel was still available. I have heard it said that with unleaded fuel, I should use premium, is this true? or does it even matter?

You can buy an additive to added to unleaded fuel to help it lubricat the valves --- it isn't lead but doesn the same thing. I would use it on any engine from '70 and back unless you've rebuilt the heads to handle unleaded fuel.

I've a '59 with a '63 engine. I used the additive too untill I ran out... Now I run it with RON 95 without any additive, they recomment RON 98 for a better combustion but RON 95 is cheaper. (RON 95 is the lowest octane in Holland)

By this time your valves have probably been replaced by steel valves. So I would not worry about it. Most of the fear of unleaded gas are myths created by the manufacturers of Ethyl hoping to prevent their being banned. In the oil fields of Kansas we used to run gasoline engines to operate the oil pumps on natural gas or drip gas that came out of the wells with no additives. These engines ran for years, day and night, with very little problems or maintenance. I drove a 1948 ford and a 1954 plymouth on the drip gas and had no problems with either car. Drip gas is the condensate out of natural gas wells and is pure usually low octane gas. In the years I have spent servicing VW, the valve problems have been from overheated engines (usually caused by driving in too high a gear at low speed so the engine fan was not able to provide enough air to cool a laboring engine) or neglected or improper valve adjustment.
