Timing question

My replica has a 73 1835 engine...What should I set the timing at? I'm having trouble with it pinging under acceleration and running warm (about 225-240 f.) on the freeway at 60-65mph. Thank you, Larry Hill

...the setting of timing is dependant on distributer model and year, not engine year. Please post whether your distributor is vacuum advance, or centrifigal. If vacuum, post the numbers on the body of it, so that year may be ascertained. If it is centrifigal, it is likelt an 009..though there are other centrifigal only distributors for vws. If it is an 009 timing is set to full advance at 2500-3000 rpm to 28-35 degrees. I usually use 31-32. HTH

It is centrifigal and an 009. If it is pinging should I retard or advance? Thanks again..Larry

..pinging generally occurrs when timing it too advanced, fuel grade is too low, or compression ratio is too high. retard it a little...but really timing is critical for these engines to live. Get a light and set it proper. =-)

I will set the timing first thing in the morning.I don't know what the compression ratio is but I do use 91 octane...And again thank you...Larry Hill
