vw type 1 oil temp sensor

Dec 19, 2005 1 Replies

Hi,

I have a single port single oil pressure relieve valve engine and was wondering if it's OK to install oil temperature sensor in the relieve valve plug. From what I heard this sensor is usually installed in place of plug of the secondary valve not the one by the oil pump.

Will this affect my readout on the gage? As far as replacing plug with sensor goes, sensor is identical to the shape of the plug.

Thanks, Anton

Either location can result in errors from the "true" oil temp because the plug is not in the flow of the oil. But....as long as you establish what reading is "normal" for your engine, it can serve a useful purpose.

Personally, I prefer the sender sitting right in the oil sump, washed directly by the oil. But, given the limitations, I don't see a problem with what you're doing.
