1991 240 Automatic Transmission leak

All was going well with my lovely 240 (US) untill the past week. Sure I was leaking the quart of trans fluid every two weeks or so. But, in the last week the fluid has come gushing out of it-3 qts a day and hits the exhaust creating horrific smoke . It leaks like there is no end. Surely, there is, like the end of the trans.

I see it dripping off a metal line from directly below. I have resigned myself to the worse case scenario-that is- a used or rebuilt trans.

Okay, I guess I have a shop check for leakage source?

Also, how do I know if the trans has the notch for the crank sensor or not unless it is removed form the car first?

Advance thanks

Check the transmission cooler lines where they mount to the engine there is a small bracket that they are held in onto remove the hold down bracket & you will mostlikly see that the steel line is worn away there you can replace the lines or just remove the worn section of line & replace with a section of fuel line Glenn

Sounds like the cooling line has cracked, it tends to happen right near where it bolts to the frame under the car. I fixed one of these once by cutting out the cracked section, flaring the ends and patching in a piece of power steering hose.

Speedometer still working? (if it's similar to my '83...) then another place to look is the speedo drive where it attaches to the tranny. Mine broke off (thanks to a broken tranny mount) and dumped fluid. ymmv.

Not in a '91, they went to an electronic rear axle speedo in '86.
